The Jerusalem Ridge Festival

The Excelsior School House ...

One Room School House - On September 15, 2010, the Iler family of Ohio County, KY donated to the Jerusalem Ridge Foundation this one hundred year old one room Excelsior School House. This school house is part of the living history of Bluegrass Music. Uncle Pen, and Bill played square dances in this school house when Bill Monroe was just a boy. Come feel the history when you walk into this historic building.

Also, of interest is the fact that this school house, which sits about 6 miles from the Monroe Home Place, is built exactly like the Horton School that Bill and his siblings attended. There were three school houses in this area built by the same builder from the same plans at the turn of the century. This one is the only one that remains.

Much restoration remains to be done but the donors will make the school available to visitors during the festival.

Directions to the school-

As you leave Jerusalem Ridge Road, turn left onto HWY 62. Go about 4 miles west and turn left onto Rob Roy Road. Go about 2 miles and turn left onto Sandefur Crossing Road. GO about a mile and you will see the Excelsior School on the left.
